Windows Live Writer

Yes, I'm back to this editing tool. And I'm pleasantly surprised about how much it has moved along since I tried the early beta version. Great work people!

What is Shree up to?

Shree, my former boss, who is responsible for getting me me across the Atlantic in the first place, left Microsoft about a year ago. Now he's making the headlines again with Jott.

Congratulations Shree!

Bodies

I went to see the Bodies exhibition yesterday. It was absolutely amazing. Even though my local barista said that these people had not given their consent beforehand (I haven't verified that) the result was absolutely amazing.

So what is it?

It is an exhibition from China where they have preserved human bodues using polymeres and then removed and exposed parts of the body so you get to see all the bones, muscles, nerves, circulatory systems, etc. My favourite parts were the circulatory systems, where they had filled arteries and veins with coloured resin and then removed everything else chemically (the cleaner in the movie Nikita springs to mind) and displayed them so beautifully I wanted to take them home, and then the fetal development area where you got to see fetuses in different stages of development.

In the past I have read books on anatomy and even been part of developing multimedia software about the human body. But I have never had such a total and immersing experience about it. I am still filled with awe and amazement of the complexity of the human body. And to actually remember that all these parts were from real human beings made it come to life even more, pardon the pun.

A wholehearted recommendation!

Talking about Boing Boing: Ambulance driver training hurt by copyright

In an article, BoingBoing is writing how some copyright problem is preventing the London Ambulance Service from changing the Guidelines they are using. The post also talks about the fact that they have received version 2.2 rather than 3.0 because of this issue.

What I don't really understand is:

  • If they are getting an old version because of the copyright problems, is that because the old version was adjusted to their needs and the new ones are not?
  • Why don't the LAS hire somebody to write something like "Special Guidelines for Ambulance Crew in Greater London" and present that as an addion to the current boks. Then they would own the copyright to that book, and they would be able to use whichever version of the other book they wanted.

I sometimes wonder...

They are getting more annoying those spammers

I received yet another of those annoying emails hat are inspired by Nigerian spammers. I wish they could get more creative and bettr at their English. This one is rather pathetic, with its barrister having refugee status and wanting to invest in real estate.  I'm glad the SPF check worked out, but a bit miffed that gmail's spam filters didn't catch that.

Anyway, enjoy.

Hybrid schmybrid

I have been looking at cars and how they impact the environment. THere are hybrid cars around that does emit less and gives a better fuel economy, but they all are based on very conventional car architecture. What I mean is things like traditional drive train, etc.

On top of that, most of the time they are downgrades from similar cars. A Honda Civic hybrid is less powerful than a normal Honda Civic. Most hybrid SUVs are also 2WD, rather than the 4WD that we normally expect.

Enter British company PML. They have invalidated the warranty (BMW asked them to clarify that) on a new MINI Cooper by replacing the normal engine and power train with batteries, a small combustion engine and 4 high-power electric engines. One in each wheel. This gives some really interesting effects:

  • 4WD
  • Top speed 150 mph
  • Acceleration 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds
  • Operating range 900 miles
  • Output power 640 bhp

Unfortunately there are no prices yet. You cannot even buy it yet. But it's fantastic to see. This combined with all electric cars like the Tesla paints a quite positive picture for the future.

If we could only get major car companies to create something this innovative.

Airlines adding in-flight calling!

Is it irony when two airlines announce that they will allow cellphones on board just days after British passengers weren't even allowed to take pens with them on board. I mean, it's (potentially) great that you can phone from the air, but you will have to be allowed to take the phone with you.
